What is so special about golden hour?
Clients often ask me why I schedule outdoor portrait sessions “so late” when they include babies and toddlers since it is usually at or after their bedtime.
Let me start by reassuring you that starting a photoshoot at your kiddo’s normal bedtime is NOT a recipe for disaster. Because they are out and about, kids are often more likely to enjoy themselves and accept the activity as a fun outing rather than a forced chore-like activity. For toddlers and babies, I will often recommend that you push the last nap of the day a little later or add an extra short one for the day, which will help leave their sleep schedule undisturbed in the days following your session. Mom of two here, so I know the ‘after effects’ are the scary part more so than the day-of tantrum risk.
These beautiful sessions below show you that perfect golden light I strive for, to create the beautiful halos in your hair, to have beautiful subtle shadows (not harsh ones), and especially in the summer it isn’t as hot out and much more comfortable for everyone (when it is 40+ degrees during the day, after 7PM it thankfully drops to a comfortable 20-30 degrees).
Starting a little earlier than an hour before sunset allows for us to capture some beautiful portraits in the neutral lighting, a few during that short but sweet golden light, and finish up before the blue nautical light kicks in. It is my absolute favourite because it provides such variety in the gallery, all while remaining cohesive. If it is an overcast day we start a little earlier since the daylight will end sooner too and we don’t have to worry about the harsh shadows. Without further ado, the visual proof:
How do I book a photo session?
I’d love to capture your growing family and new baby moments. Use the contact page to send a message to set up a phone consultation so we can discuss details and customize your experience. Maternity Photo Sessions are best had between weeks 27-37 when mom-to-be is still feeling great & has a sizable bump, and there are many gowns and tops available for use during your session (studio or outdoors). Newborn Photo Sessions are best held within the first 2 weeks from birth.
