Newborn Baby Austin – 23 days new

Baby Austin came to visit the portrait studio for his newborn photography session at just over 3 weeks new, at 23 days new to be exact. He slept for a large portion of the session, which allowed for us to get some beautiful images. We even got to incorporate his older sister for a sweet kiss. See for yourself!

World, meet Austin.

You all know how much I love when older babies come into the studio, because they often come with all that extra chub. Austin was no different. He was a little bigger than most, being a few weeks old, but I was still surprised that when I took him out of his onesie to see that it was a 3 months size, especially since I was about to put him into a little tiny newborn outfit. Well, this was a perfect example of why I buy my outfits from handmade shops who specifically make them for photography purposes: slim-fit to show their tinyness, but with a ton of give in all the right places. Alas, my adorable little cream outfit (mom’s special request) fit him perfectly, and was the perfect addition to the little sleeper setup I had planned.

I specialize in minimalist images using neutrals and textures, so I was thrilled when mom requested specifically only to use white, cream, and grey setups. I immediately knew how I wanted to style it, and had the perfect prop to incorporate into the minimalism. This lovely grey bowl fit into mom’s wishes, but also allows for us to see the true tiny size of baby Austin. A few extra days, and he would not have fit into it! So when he comes back for his sitting milestone, we can carefully place him into it to show the size difference–that is my favourite part about incorporating props.

Ohh, the rolls. I love me a good dose of baby chub! Especially when they sleep through the pose, butt-naked, and don’t make the expected mess. Praising the diaper gods on that one!

Then comes the toddler. I won’t lie and tell you that photographing toddlers is easy, because it’s absolutely not. BUT there are ways to get them interested in what you’re doing, just long enough for me to snap a photo that parents love. While I strive for perfection, and getting both children looking at the camera would be nice, sometimes these tender interactions are even more sweet. As it turns out, this was actually the first time big sister had ever kissed her little brother. I am so honoured to have been able to capture that moment for mom and dad.

Quite often, moms show up to the studio with baby only intending for the adorable little newborn portraits to be captured–where they don’t anticipate being in front of the camera, but I always invite them to do so. With the promise that they can keep them hidden should they so choose, but it is my absolute goal to make sure they exist–you never know, a few months later you may really regret not having had them done. This is a perfect example of how beautiful women are, with or without makeup, loving on their new baby. And I am thrilled that she let me share these with you! But to be honest, it doesn’t surprise me because she is such an honest & tell-it-like-it-is woman, as can be seen by her Mom Break presence. <– You should go follow her for some #momtruths
